...That is part of it, but for the most part I was in Killarney at Killarney Mountain Lodge on the Northern Georgian Bay from May to September, with very little computer access. And now I'm back in Pembroke swimming the Ottawa River rapids, kayaking and rock climbing. For school.
While at KML I worked most of my time at the boathouse and marina, docking huge yachts and sail boats. It gave me a new appreciation for sailing, especially since the dock masters were two of the coolest people I've ever met, having been living on their sailboat together for more than 23 years hopping from country to country! How awesome is that. Here's their online cruising log: [link]
After working in the boathouse for a bit I was moved to guiding sea kayak, canoe and hiking trips with guests on the bay and in the provincial park. That place has some pretty unique features, like the La Clouche mountain range made of white quartzite. It also has some of the wildest weather I've ever experienced, from random appearances of fog, to flash torrential thunderstorms... I was closer than I've ever been to a lightning strike before, about 100 meters away. I also chased a lot of black bears around.
I met a bunch of great people while there, who were awesome to work with and live with. I drank enough beer over the summer to fill the Huron. I learned that Europeans love beards, and love nudity even more! And that Americans are better tippers than Canadians.
So I have this final year of school left, then I'm back on my own, and I'll be paying off my government and bank loans... I'll also be travelling regardless.
Enjoy my new submissions.
Rob.
